New York fashion week has come to an end and the runways have been filled with mainstream and over the top beauty looks during the past 9 days. From Victoria Beckham debuting her colour cosmetics line in collaboration with beauty giant Estee Lauder to Alexander Wang’s makeover madness resulting in transforming 18 of his models into surfer girls with a bleached haircut borrowed from the 70’s. Not to mention Gypsy Sport’s flamboyant clown makeup, V Files pre-surgery drawn face and smudged lipstick, Desigual’s interpretation of snapchat filters and Proenza Schouler’s ear makeup. Yes, you read that right. It’s apparently a thing now.
The slightly wet and slicked back hair looks from former seasons has turned into being drenched in gel. Thakoon, Altuzarra, Coach and Hood By Air went with this sporty, sleek look. Faces are either bare to embrace a natural approach as seen at Lacoste, Tommy Hilfiger and Zac Posen while the colour palette stretches far when it comes to lips and eye makeup.
The no-makeup look in combination with blushed cheeks and mid-parted hair seemed to become quite a hit amongst Ralph Lauren, Vera Wang and Oscar de la Renta while Michael Kors opted for side parted hairdos. Boss kept it fully natural with hints of immaculate glow as did Brandon Maxwell paired with dark nude lips and high ponytails. Nicholas K chose to pair the high ponytail with sun-kissed cheeks and a flirty eye shadow and Tom Ford paired the bronzed cheeks with an uptown glam look and slick hair while he debuted his first see-now-buy-now collection.
Kohl-rimmed eyes influenced by the 90’s grunge made its mark at Libertine, 3.1 Philip Lim, Prabal Gurung and Carolina Herrera. The rock n’ roll, smudged eye makeup didn’t stop just there. Baja East’s models came across as considerably more fashionable versions of a female Rambo with their luscious, tropical apparel and damp hair tucked under bandanas. While Tom Pecheux wanted to give the Rag & Bone girls a typical “I woke up like this after a wild night out and fell asleep with my makeup on.” Just a bit more perfected.
The smoky eye has evolved to become bolder and more confident to the likes of Jeremy Scott. His bewigged army wore everything from metallic blue and fiery red to bronze, apricot sorbet and lilac eye shadows with matching mascara. Jill Stuart’s smoky eye consisted of three mixed shimmery metallic shades and Tadashi Shoji and Ottolinger took on a deep red and pinkish smoky eye. Anna Sui’s models also made quite an impression with their burgundy smoky eyes and matching lip gloss.
Neon blue, Barbie pink and orangey red lips with matte texture shown at Thom Browne, Cushnie et Ochs and Jason Wu made it clear that Spring/ Summer -17 season is still all about vibrant and colourful cosmetics while Pat McGrath made yet another outshining appearance with her dark, polished jewel lips at DKNY.
Marc Jacobs ended the 9- day long fashion week with a spectacular show where models invaded the catwalks in massive pastel coloured dreadlocks twisted on the top of their heads with matching eye makeup and glossy lips. “The look is very 80’s English rave – Boy George, Marilyn Manson, Club Kids, all people who are not scared to push boundaries.” – Said Francois Nars about the six looks he created for the grand finale.
