That first pale golden ray of sun and the white blossoms on the almond trees are probably two of the
happiest things in the world – they could steal a smile to the grumpiest of us. Suddenly it’s time to show off
that vintage denim jacket you got on the sale a few months ago and that pair of shiny new sandals. It’s time
for Coachella, drinks on a rooftop bar at sunset and leaving work when the sun’s still up. As we’ve been told
by Instagram like a million times… Spring has sprung.
It finally makes sense to shop the SS17 collections that have been on display in the windows on the high
street for a month: it is so warm, that we can actually wear that lightweight blazer or that cotton flowery
shirt. Obviously, always shop with a condition: knowing what you need and always keeping the next trend in
To make it easier for you, we’ve listed the ten major trends that we think will hit the promenades (and
newsfeeds) this Summer: shop wisely now, have great style for the whole season.
From Zara to Alexander McQueen, ruffles are a detail that has gone viral, literally. Find it on sleeves, hem or
just randomly placed on the body; made of silk, leather or lace, embroidered or plain... There’s one for
Oversized, ruffled, extra long, balloon, flared, puffed... Sleeves are the real protagonists this season. Mainly
with a three-quarter length, they come in all shapes and sizes, giving your outfit a funny, playful and young
Someone said once, “Florals? for spring? Ground-breaking”. We are playing by the rules this year, and
more: an iconic head-to-toe look in a flower print, shoes included. It’d make Miranda Priestly shiver.
COLOUR WASH EYES
Long live the 80s: play colourful, bold and bright and smoke it out around the eye and brow bone.
SMUDGED RED LIP
“Spaghetti Mouth”, as named by the make-up pro Ciara O’Shea, is the hottest trend of SS17: bold
coloured lipsticks smudged all around – as if you had been kissing your boyfriend for too long. We like it!
Are you wild enough to wear a lip like this for a casual night out? Lavish, but a great statement accessory
that will take all eyes on you – match it to a cat eye, as shown by Fendi.
The smaller, the better. Even if your phone won’t fit, the trend dictates a small shoulder bag, or a bigger
one with a hand carry. Bye shoppers!
DETAIL AT YOUR FEET
Shoes are a strong focus for this season. Coming in any shape and colour, they will make any look go
strong. Remember, go big or nothing: heel or kitten heel, knee-high or ankle boot, plain or embroidered,
but never doing things by halves.
