EDWARD ENNINFUL'S BRITISH VOGUE

WHAT WE CAN EXPECT

It can seem, sometimes, that not much makes sense in this world full of clashing ideals and opinions; however, occasionally a decision is made that is met with unanimous regard, such was the response to the news that beloved stylist Edward Enninful was to be appointed the new Editor-in-Chief at British Vogue.

When the news broke last April that Enninful was to replace Alexandra Shulman after her 25 year tenure at the magazine, fashion fans and insiders immediately began to ruminate on the historic appointment and what it could mean for the magazine. As the first male editor for a Vogue publication, how will his vision differ from his female predecessors and counterparts? Race has also always been a major source of inspiration for Enninful’s work, most notably seen in his styling for the historic all-black issue of Italian Vogue, which required a reprint due to popularity, and has since become a collectors item. Drawing on his close ties to his Ghanian roots and family, Enninful has long been a champion, if not a face, for race equality in the fashion industry, an issue for which British Vogue has previously been chided. There is no doubt that Enninful will usher in a new age of diversity at the magazine, not only in the pages, but behind the scenes as well.

As someone who has been in the fashion industry for decades, starting out as a model in London at 16, being appointed as Fashion Director for i-D Magazine by 18, and continuing on to work for several international Vogues and W Magazine, as well as countless ad campaigns, Enninful is as much a bold faced name in the fashion community as the supermodels and celebrities with whom he can be seen rubbing shoulders. Knowing the advantages of his connections, Enninful announced in June that he was appointing none other than close friend Naomi Campbell, director Steve McQueen and the venerable Grace Coddington as contributors. Add to that the confirmation that Kate Moss would continuing her styling role that she had begun previously for the magazine, and you have quite the powerhouse line up.

Imagery will certainly be the focus of the new British Vogue, as Enninful has become known for his powerful use of styling and photography, pushing the envelope between generations, race, sexuality and all other foreseeable boundaries. At only 44, Enninful is connected to the social media generation and the topics of interest for a younger audience. His appointment was carefully chosen by Condé Nast, as a sign of the times, signaling change, diversity and tasteful provocation. As Enninful steps into his new role on August 1st, the changing world is ready and willing to accompany him on his journey. He has a platform primed and ready for change and we can’t wait to see what he has in store.
