Giambattista Valli debuted a Fall Winter 2017 collection with a semblance of la Parisienne and a returning essence to the city. The show’s soundtrack featured Malcolm McLaren’s “Paris Paris,” with an accompanying voiceover by Catherine Deneuve. Valli reimagined the little black dress in interpreting “today’s version of a Parisian petite robe noire.”
The collection walked deconstructed silhouettes in palettes of black. The collection spoke to a prevalent boudoir aesthetic. Ruffles and peplum maintained Valli’s feminine trademark, whilst contrasted against corsets to achieve a slightly perverse reinterpretation. French polka-dots danced on garments, as lace dresses were peppered with sequined cherries.
Houndstooth wool and floral tapestry coincided with guipure lace and embroidery. The designer advanced a step further as elaborate tops were paired back to Nike leggings, thus making a case for the exaggerated athleisure movement. Ruffled, billowing tops were unexpectedly, yet pleasantly complimented by the contrast of fitted, spandex, performance leggings. The Fall Winter 2017 collection was a beautiful mergence of compliments and contrasts, an ode the the feminine complex, executed effortlessly through the creative of Giambattista Valli.
