Tropical paradise from Jamaica

This week, Ralph Lauren’s designs could be seen not only in Pyeongchang at the Olympics, but also on the runway in New York City for Fashion Week as he launched his Spring/Summer 2018 line for men and women. His classic style was given a fresh take as Lauren drew on nautical inspiration from his retreat to Montego Bay, Jamaica, combining the vibrant green and yellow from the country’s flag with the quintessential red, white, and blue for which Ralph Lauren has become so famous. “I’ve always loved blue and white because it makes you feel good. It makes you dream,” stated the designer.

Lauren’s show did just that, and we can already feel and smell the Caribbean sea breeze blowing through our hair and tickling our nose. He has certainly got us dreaming about the adorable flirty, casual dress that Bella Hadid took to the runway in, a combination of Lauren’s must-have denim, that was plentiful throughout the show, and the delightfully feminine addition of a short feathered skirt. The look was completed with matching denim and brown-strapped pumps. Model Shena Moulton was a vision in a gorgeous, strapless romper featuring sequins and long, flowing multi-print fabric in blue and white, giving the illusion of a maxi dress. We saw Joan Smalls in a fitted dress in boldly colored stripes, continuing the sequin trend, and bringing in the Jamaican inspired green and yellow. Then Lauren got down to business with his sportswear in his notable red, white, and blue color scheme. One of our favorite looks featured a bulky, gold anchor necklace; a perfectly tailored blue blazer with matching anchor buttons; a plunging, crisp white cotton blouse; striped jogger-style pants, and shiny patent pumps.

For the women, hair and makeup were kept very clean and simple with dewy, fresh faces and loose, undone hair.

Bella wasn’t the only Hadid to grace the catwalk; her brother, Anwar Hadid, also represented Ralph Lauren as one of the star models of the men’s show. He was an excellent culmination of the shows nautical theme, sporting an acid wash denim jacket, blue and white striped sweater, colorfully patterned silk scarf, white linen pants, and, of course, the famous family pout. Classy, preppy blazers, brightly colored and boldly patterned scarves and ties, breathable cottons and boats shoes were all common elements in these posh yacht club looks.

Perhaps the most notable thing about the men’s show wasn’t so much their wardrobe, but the extent of their hair-styling and makeup, which was in complete contrast to the women’s more natural looks. Ralph Lauren followed in the steps of fellow fashion designers Jeremy Scott and Thom Browne in his decision to embrace the use of male makeup. The male models of Lauren’s Spring/Summer show stunned with their contour and coif, gelled hair styled to the max of prep-school perfection. If there were a movie called The Stepford Husbands, we’re pretty sure we know exactly what the cast would look like.

Ralph Lauren’s NYFW show also had many celebrities in attendance to ogle their future purchases for their next Caribbean vacay and show support for the fashion icon with Katie Holmes, Hilary Swank, Rachel Brosnahan and youngest son David Lauren with his wife, Lauren Bush Lauren, seen sitting in the front row. Following the show’s end, Ralph Lauren took to the catwalk to take his bow and wave to the crowd, his family eagerly waiting nearby to congratulate him.
